Information for Advisers

The University Honors Program includes over 940 students representing nearly every major in the University. University Honors students are serious students who work hard and aim high, but they know how to manage their time so they can enjoy a balanced and complete undergraduate experience. You'll find Honors students in student government, in the President's Leadership Program, on varsity and intramural athletic teams, in the CSU Marching Band and other music ensembles, and in fraternities, sororities, and service organizations.

Here are links for CSU advisers to pages where you learn more about our program, its requirements, and how it affects your students. If you can't find everything you want to know about us here, send us an email or give us a call (491-5679).

Two Tracks for Honors Students:

There are two curricular tracks to provide an enriched educational experience for high ability students in all majors.

Students in the University Honors Scholar program of study (Track 1) fulfill seven AUCC core categories by completing four Honors seminars, two Honors courses in the major, and a faculty-mentored Honors senior year activity or thesis. Track 1 is particularly well suited for incoming freshmen who have completed less than 20 college credits. For additional information about Track 1, click here.

The new Discipline Honors Scholar program of study (Track 2) focuses on upper division honors experiences in the student's major. Students become a Discipline (e.g., Chemistry or English) Honors Scholar by completing twelve upper division credits in the major and a faculty-mentored Honors senior year creative activity or thesis. Track 2 is designed for transfer students, incoming freshmen with substantial AP/IB credit, or outstanding currently enrolled CSU students. Additional information on Track 2 can be found here.

Advising Honors Students

To determine if a student is an Honors student, you can call our office or check ISIS. Track 1 students are indicated on the AH AHSUMM screen in ISIS. For these students, the DECLARATION field contains the HPCC designation, which indicates that the student is completing Track 1 (Honors Program core curriculum). Track 2 students are not listed in ISIS but you can check "options" on the CIS GUIDE to see if the student is in Track 2 (Disciplinary Honors Scholar).

Honors courses are indicated as Honors on the AH CHRNLIST screen in ISIS. The Honors seminars and thesis do not have "Honors" in the title, but do use an HP prefix. Courses in the major will have either Honors, Hon or H in the course title. Track 1 students take two courses in the major, and Track 2 students take 12 credits of upper division courses in their major. The Honors Program office monitors whether students have met the Honors requirements for graduation so departmental advisors do not need to track Honors courses. After an Honors student completes the courses required in the major, the Honors Office enters those courses on the student's GUIDE.

For a list of courses in the major for Track 1 students, click here.

For required courses in the major for Track 2 students, click here.

All Honors students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA are allowed priority registration and can register beginning the first day of the registration period. Before registration begins, they receive an email from the Honors Office providing information about how to access hidden section IDs for honors courses, and descriptions and section ID numbers for the Honors seminars.

Completion of the AUCC core:

Track 2 (Discipline Honors Scholars) students satisfy the AUCC core by taking courses in each of the eleven categories.

Track 1 (University Honors Scholars) students complete seven of the eleven core categories through four Honors (HP) seminars and a senior thesis or creative activity. Students must complete the remaining Track 1 requirements -- two Honors courses in the major, the Honors pre-thesis class (HP399) and the senior Honors Thesis class (HP499) -- to fulfill the AUCC requirements in:
     Additional Communications (2A)
     Historical Perspectives (3D)
     Global and Cultural Awareness (3E)

The AUCC categories not covered by Honors seminars include 1B (Mathematics), 2B (Logical/Critical Thinking), 3A (Biological/Physical Sciences), and 3G (Health and Wellness).

If a student begins but does not complete the Honors core, AUCC categories are satisfied as follows:

Course                                                                          AUCC Requirement Fulfilled

HP192 and HPCC193                                                   Written Communication (1A)

HP192, HPCC193 and HPCC392                              Arts/Humanities (3B) and U.S. Public                                                                                            Values and Institutions (3F)

HP192, HPCC193, HPCC392 and HPCC492         Social/Behavioral Sciences (3C)

Upon request from the student, the Honors Office will write a letter explaining how the honors seminars correspond to specific general education requirements (i.e., COCC150, SPCC200) to be included with the student's application to graduate or professional school.

Honors courses and sections

Honors students can fulfill the Honors requirements in their majors in a variety of ways. Some majors designate specific courses which must be taken for honors credit; other majors are more flexible and do not require specific classes. Honors courses may be special stand-alone honors sections, a regular class with a special "break-out" session for honors students, or regular courses taken for honors option.

Honors sections of regular classes: Some courses have sections specifically designated for Honors students. The section IDs for those classes do not appear in RamWeb, but are supplied to all Honors students.

Regular classes with "break-out session" for Honors students: A special, enriched Honors component of a regular class transforms the entire course into an Honors course on student transcripts. The enriched, extra component includes a 50 minute meeting each week with the faculty instructor of the class. Students do NOT normally receive extra course credit for the extra time involved with this type of class.

Honors option: Any regular class can be transformed to an Honors course when the student and instructor agree on an extra enriching activity. Completing the enriched component converts the entire course to Honors on the transcript. Enrichment activities are described on the Honors Option Student Registration form.

Requirements for Graduation in Honors

A student seeking to complete the University Honors Program must fulfill the curriculum requirements for Track 1 (University Honors Scholar) and/or Track 2 (Departmental Honors Scholar) (see above) and attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 at the time of graduation. The Honors designation will appear on both the transcript and diploma.

Students who complete the Honors Track 1 curriculum with less than a 3.5 cumulative GPA still fulfill 21 credits of the AUCC requirements and at least six credits in their major. They do not receive the "University Honors Scholar" designation on their diploma or transcript, although all completed coursework taken for Honors credit will appear on the student's transcript as Honors courses.

Track 2 students who graduate with less than a 3.5 cumulative GPA do not receive the Departmental Honors Scholar designation on diploma or transcripts, although all completed coursework taken for Honors credit will appear on the student's transcript as Honors courses.

Honors Enrichment Awards

The Honors Enrichment Award program provides funds for enhanced educational experiences for Honors students.  Awards in the amount of $100 to $500 may be used to fund opportunities in a variety of areas including leadership development, cultural events, undergraduate research, study abroad, academic conferences, and community service trips.
