Welcome to With Honors, Fall 2007

Welcome to the Fall 2007 edition of With Honors, the on-line newsletter for Honors alumni. We have lots of exciting news to share with you about events here on campus.

Honors 50th Anniversary Events

This year's Homecoming festivities will include special events for Honors alumni and friends. Activities include the 50th Anniversary Lecture by Dr. Bernie Rollin on Friday, October 5th at 7 pm in the Lory Student Center Theater, followed by a dessert reception in the Art Lounge. The lecture is titled "Science and Ethics".

The Honors 50th Anniversary will also be marked that day by the official Grand Opening of the new Academic Village, home to the Honors Residential Learning Community, as well as the Engineering Residential Learning Community. CSU President Larry Penley will cut the ceremonial ribbon outside the common area at 4:30 pm.

On Saturday, October 6, Honors will host an open house for campus visitors from 11 am to 1 pm. The Honors offices, seminar rooms, and Fireside Lounge will be open. Memorabilia from the first five decades of the University Honors program will be displayed in the seminar rooms. Current Honors students will be available to chat with guests and answer questions about the program.

Honors Professor for 2006-2007

Keith Jaggers has been selected by officers of the Honors Student Association as the Honors Professor of the Year, 2006-7. His nomination by five different students is an indication of the popularity of his junior and senior seminars (this fall's seminars are titled: Globalize This! Fear and Loathing in the Age of Progress; Why Do They Hate Us?; and Focus on Freedom). He will present the Honors Prof lecture on November 8th at 7 pm in the Cherokee Park Room of the Lory Student Center. The public is invited.

Where in the World is Louise Breyer?

The unthinkable has happened! After 17 years in the Honors Office, Louise Breyer has retired to.. Kansas? Texas? California? We're not exactly sure but we've been getting emails and phone calls from her from all over the country and she has even popped in between trips to lend an occasional (and very welcome) hand. Louise officially retired at the end of July. We hope that this year's award as Honors Advisor of the Year didn't push her out the door (for more on the award and Louise, click here.) But we all know that Honors owes a great debt of gratitude to Mama Honors and we could easily fill an entire issue with comments from students about her.

University Honors Scholarship Fund

Current scholarships administered by the department are awarded to less than 1% of the program participants. The rapidly escalating costs of higher education have posed significant challenges to many of the program's participants and new funds are being sought to address that need. A mailing to program alumni in the spring netted the first donations to the fund. Contributions can be made online here or mailed to the Colorado State University Foundation, PO Box 1870, Fort Collins, CO 80522-1870. Please include the designation of Honors Scholarship Fund 59085.

2007 Scholarship Winners

We are extremely proud of all of our Honors students, of course, but this year's scholarship recipients are an exceptionally compassionate and service-oriented group. Read all about the nine amazing students who received scholarship support through the generous contributions of our donors. We're sure that you'll be as impressed with them as we are.

The Class of 2011

We have over 368 new freshmen this fall, a record number for the Honors Program. Our "typical" student is a Colorado resident female who graduated in the top 5% of her class, with a 4.0 GPA, 30 ACT composite score, and 1331 SAT (math and verbal). Incoming students are excited about the new Academic Village, our new seminar rooms, and especially the Fireside Lounge.
